WHAT IS A DOMAIN NAME?

If you are planning to get your Pinoy website or blog launched on the internet and you don’t know how to start, you probably would not know that you need a domain name first before you can get your site up and running.

A domain name is, in practical terms, your internet address.  When you give your domain name to other people to see, you are literally pointing them to your specific virtual space on the internet.  Since the internet uses computers, domain names have IP addresses assigned to it.  In technical terms, domain names are translated by the Domain Name System (DNS) into numeric addresses (Internet Protocol (IP) numbers) used by the network. The name itself, eg: hostingpinoy.com, is the point of reference that allows visitors to easily locate our hosting site.  Your domain can be whatever you want as long as it is available.

Wikipedia describes domain name as follows:

The main purpose of a domain name is to provide symbolic representations, i.e., recognizable names, to mostly numerically addressed Internet resources. This abstraction allows any resource (e.g., website) to be moved to a different physical location in the address topology of the network, globally or locally in an intranet, in effect changing the IP address. This translation from domain names to IP addresses (and vice versa) is accomplished with the global facilities of Domain Name System (DNS).

By allowing the use of unique alphabetical addresses instead of numeric ones, domain names allow Internet users to more easily find and communicate with web sites and any other IP-based communications services. The flexibility of the domain name system allows multiple IP addresses to be assigned to a single domain name, or multiple domain names to be services from a single IP address. This means that one server may have multiple roles (such as hosting multiple independent websites), or that one role can be spread among many servers. One IP address can also be assigned to several servers, as used in anycast networking.

For a very small fee, your domain name will be purchased for you almost at cost. We do not make our usual markup on domain names.  We understand that you can actually get this yourself for the same amount we will pay but if you are not familiar on how to manage it so that you can get your site up and running fast, then you can avail of this service from us.

How much is the domain name from us?

For top level domain names such as .com, .net, .org domains (highly recommended), it normally sells for $9.99 per year so you can get it from us for only P500 per year.  This is an add-on cost to your hosting fee but if you are like us, you will not look into this as cost but rather as an investment.  Good domain names in itself can be sold for profit.  Great domain names that you can build over time can be worth a thousand times its purchase price of P500.

There are also .ph and .com.ph or .net.ph domains (otherwise known as country-specific domains) that you can use if you want to specifically target and present yourself as a Philippine site.  The normal cost is about $75 for 2 years.  We can purchase and manage these domains for you as well but please contact us for a quote on this if you prefer .ph domain names.
